National Flag
The Samoan flag has a red background with a dark blue rectangle top left (where the Union Jack is on Australian and NZ flags) with 5 white stars - four large, one small - representing the Southern Cross.
National Coat Of Arms
The Samoan Coat of Arms is a silver shield that contains five stars to represent the Southern Cross and the motto "Faavae i le Atua Samoa", meaning "God be the Foundation of Samoa".
Nightlife
In Apia the RSA Night Club on Beach Road is a favourite haunt (9:00am to midnight) with live music some nights. Also on Beach Road, the LIGHThouse (challenge a local at a game of pool), Blue Lagoon and Crabbers. On the Rocks, Bad Billy’s, Splash and the Tropicana Lounge Bar are worth checking out. Women travelling alone (or together) should be prepared to be bombarded with requests to dance - even those who arrive with a date aren’t immune. The fa’afefine (transvestites) usually travel in groups and change venues regularly. At the time of writing the Tropicana was the flavour of the month and fa’afefine beauty pageants preceded the dancing.
Nonu Fruit
This is the Samoan spelling for noni fruit (morinda cigrifolia). It grows wild all through Samoa and is so plentiful you can sometimes grab some at the markets and won’t be charged. Noni has taken off in parts of the world, particularly the United States, as a daily hit of health (a dietary supplement that’s meant to be good for the inside and outside). In 2004 the export of nonu was Samoa’s equal second largest export earner (tying with Vailima beer). The country’s biggest export is fish.
